Free Search Engine Optimisation Tips

Web page optimization
Keyword optimization and web page optimization are the foundations of Search Engine Optimization. In order to get your page listed, you must firstly build your page as a Search Engine friendly page. Here are some points to consider when optimizing your page:
  • Pick keywords that are most relevant to your web site. You may not get 1,000,000 hits a day but you’ll get relevant visitors and keep them coming back if your site is of interest.
  • Optimize your entire page and not just the <title> and <meta> tags. Search engines will search your page from top to bottom for relevant keywords in order to determine weather it should be listed or not. An optimized <title> tag will do nothing for your site.
  • Utilizing the <body>, <H1/H2/H3>, <bold/strong> tags along with the <title> and <meta> tags and your links will give your page a much better chance of being listed and get you a better SERP (Search Engine Ranking Page).
  • Your URL is important. Be sure to pick a web address that is relevant to your page as this is the most important starting point for search engines. If you search for ‘Take That’ or ‘Slayer’ the first pages that will come up will be www.takethat.com and www.slayer.com. www.geocities.com/ronniestakethatpage/ will come up much lower down the search engines but that’s not to say that geocities addresses are always worse off. If you optimize your page properly, your free domain site should rank just as well and some times even better!

Checking your listing
There are ways of checking if your page is listed on a search engine or not. The most common one is to type “site:www.yourdomain.com/yoursite” in the search engine. This shows the indexed pages of that address in that search engine.

More things to consider

Know your visitors
Know what they are looking for and why they have found your site. Give them what they want. 90% of visitors to your site, who’ve used search engines, are looking for specific information and that is why they have landed on your site. If you use keywords like ‘Britney Spears’ or ‘Brad Pitt’ for your page but your page is about Horses or Horse riding, visitors who find your site will immediately leave if they do not find what they are looking for. Britney Spears may be a high ranking keyword but if those keywords don’t support your content, you’ll miss out on relevant visitors.

Content is king
A phrase used by many an SEO guru. Basically the more content (text) on your site, the more chance you have of being listed on search engines and gaining a better SERP. There are many ways to generate content for your site. Some include:

Featured Content
Featuring articles or content that others have written is a good way of building content. If you find an interesting article which is relevant to your site it is always good to feature it. Warning: Make sure to ask the permission of the author before featuring the article in order to avoid being sued!

User/Visitor generated content
This is where dynamic pages come in handy. If you allow visitors to add content to your site themselves, in the form of comments, article submissions or info about themselves, then this too will build content and gain the attention of many. In order to build visitor generated content you will need to know how to build these pages. They are usually built with ASP, PHP, ASP.NET, SQL + more.

Links Bating
Link Bating
is the most effective Search Engine Marketing (SEM) tool around. What this means is that you are setting bate (much like fishing) for your visitors and driving them to your site. When people like the content on your site or find it valuable, they will link to it and let even more people know about your site, this builds your inbound links, drives visitors to your site, gets a better Page Rank (PR) for your site and, in turn, attracts the attention of the search engines getting it listed without even trying.

Accumulating inbound links and link exchange
Some people, especially businesses, are willing to pay for inbound links others will link bate and others will exchange links. These are all good ways of generating links but one-way links onto your site are by far the most valuable. Always link bate and generate good quality content that people will link to.

On site linking
On site linking is also considered by search engines.
